Local Food Options

Salmon, halibut, herring roe-on-kelp, clams, mussels, sea asparagus, seaweed, berries, mushrooms…. No wonder we spend most of our days in the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands thinking about what we get to eat next!

The wealth of food on the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands is staggering and we are fortunate to be able to harvest some of these foods during our trips. However, the reality is that the majority of the food we eat on trips is imported from distant places.

In an effort to support local food gatherers and growers and thereby decrease our energy demands, we would like to provide you with the option of buying some local foods.

Local Foods available for 2011

* Tomatoes
* Cucumbers

How to purchase local food:

1. Let us know the type and quantity of food(s) you would like to purchase.

2. We will take care of buying the food and getting it into Gwaii Haanas for the start of your trip.

3. You can reimburse us after the trip. In general, local foods cost about one dollar more than store-bought equivalents.

This is a new venture for us and we are very excited about its possibilities. We really appreciate your interest in this idea and any feedback you might have in making it a reality. Also, please bring your own locally grown or harvested foods with you!

If you have any questions about the quality of food in the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, where it comes from, or any other concerns, please do not hesitate to ask us anytime.
