Green Coast is now offering customized kayak expeditions for small groups that would like to organize a trip outside our standard Gwaii Haanas schedule.

  • GROUPS

A minimum group size of 4 people is required to make a custom reservation. The maximum number of people we can accommodate is 8.

The cost per/person goes down as the group size increases because there is a base cost for all expeditions.

  • ROUTE OPTIONS

Haida Gwaii provides some of the most dynamic and challenging paddling conditions in the world, particularly on the west coast. There are also protected inlets and passages where families or novice paddlers can get a safe introduction to the sport. We can suggest route plans that range between 4 to 30 days, some of which are only appropriate for experienced paddlers.

  • DATES

One of the big advantages of organizing a custom expedition is total flexibility with dates. The earlier you book, the better chance we can accommodate your request. 6 to 4 months advance notice is recommended. Our paddling season on Haida Gwaii is May through September. The best weather generally occurs in July and August, but that’s also the busiest time of year on island. Humpback whales are most prevalent late June to early July, and September. The salmon runs in early fall also attract a lot of wildlife to the shorelines.

  • GUIDES

Depending on the route and group size, we will assign 1 or 2 guides to lead the expedition. All Green Coast guides are fully certified and experienced Haida Gwaii paddlers. Their primary tasks are risk mitigation, route planning, weather interpretation, communications, camp set-up and meal prep. We expect trip participants to help with all these activities, and more, throughout the entire expedition.

  • EQUIPMENT

We supply high quality fibre glass kayaks that are specifically designed for multi-day ocean paddling. PFDs, skirts and paddles are also assigned to all trip participants. All Green Coast trips are outfitted with a wilderness kitchen, group shelters, med-kits, and satellite communication devices.

  • TRANSPORTATION

We provide van transport between Green Coast Lodge and Skidegate Ferry Terminal for pre and post trip accommodation. We also provide transport to the start/end point of the trip, which likely includes a boat ride on an aluminum landing craft with our local business partner – Highlander Marine Service.

  • ACCOMMODATION

We are now offering pre and post trip accommodation at our new lodge located 20 min north of Skidegate. This beautiful 13 acre ocean side property is home to Green Coast guests and staff alike. Please reference the accommodation page for more details.

  • FOOD

All meals while on trip are served by Green Coast. We shop local as much as possible, and ensure the menu is appropriate for all dietary restrictions or preferences (vegetarian/vegan). Trip participants are required to supply their own snacks, as outlined in our packing list.

“Each day was a new paddling delight, from slow drifts through Burnaby Narrows to vigorous paddles out to SGang Gwaay. Each evening an opportunity to live lightly on the land, to practice paddling strokes and prepare marvelous meals together.”

  • “The guides are friendly, helpful and a wealth of knowledge. They tailor the trip to each group and are passionate about sharing their love of Haida Gwaii. The food was abundant and delicious. The kayaks and gear were of excellent quality. All the details of transport and preparation were well organized. Truly a great and trustworthy company for exploring this epic area. I have never been one to use guides for my backcountry trips but I would argue their expertise was a must for safety and to maximize enjoyment and opportunities to explore hidden gems!!”
